Platforms such as Spotify are trying to become the go-to service for podcasts, or in other words: “A Netflix of podcasting.” While big tech companies (such as Apple, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Amazon) determine what is, and what is not allowed on their service, podcasting is unique in that anyone anywhere can make a podcast and distribute it – there are no set rules for podcasters to follow. Now, some companies are paying for exclusive rights to host popular podcasts only on their platform as a marketing tactic. On one hand, this could be more convenient for listeners as they will receive personalized podcast recommendations, but on the other hand, it’s likely that podcasts will not be allowed the same level of creative freedom.
